The questions people actually ask.

Mostly about whether this is safe. Short answers, plain words, and where a claim can be checked, we tell you how to check it.

Is this safe?

Is Opt2In safe to use?

Yes, and the reason is boring: there is almost nothing for us to lose. Your export file is read inside your own browser tab. The file itself is never uploaded or stored anywhere.

You do not have to take our word for it. Open your browser's Network tab while the report builds and watch what leaves. You will see a small ping that a report ran, a second one counting how many offers matched, a request for our own offers file, and brand logos loading from DuckDuckGo unless you have switched them off. That is the whole list.

Is my Instagram password in the file?

No. Instagram does not put your password in your export.

Check it yourself, it takes ten seconds: open the ZIP and search it for your own password. It is not in there. The folder named security_and_login_information is the one that scares people, and it is worth opening. It holds things like your sign-up date, the devices you have logged in from, and rough locations. No password.

Can Opt2In get into my Instagram account?

No. We never connect to Instagram at all, and we never ask for your Instagram credentials. We read a file that Meta has already handed to you.

This is the fair question to ask, because the category earned it. Most "Instagram tools" are follower counters and profile-view trackers that make you log in with your real username and password. That is the thing to refuse. We never ask, because there is nothing we would do with it.

Will it post on my account, or follow anyone, or change anything?

No. It cannot. We have no connection to your account, so there is no channel through which we could post, follow, unfollow, or change a single setting.

Can Instagram tell that I did this? Could I get banned?

No. Asking for a copy of your own data is a normal feature Instagram offers on purpose, and in Europe and California it is a legal right. We never talk to Instagram, so there is nothing on our side for them to see.

Do you keep my file?

No. It is never uploaded, so there is nothing to keep. Close the tab and it is gone from the page.

If you choose to save your report to an account, we store only the analyzed summary it produced, never the file itself. That is your choice and it is not required to see the report.

Is it free? How do you make money?

The report is free, and you do not need an account to see it. You only give an email if you want to save it.

The honest answer on money: after your report we show you offers that match what we found, mostly privacy tools like ad blockers and VPNs. If you use one of those links, the brand may pay us a referral fee. You always get the brand's own deal, never a worse one for going through us. We do not sell your data, and we could not sell your export even if we wanted to, because we never receive it.

Getting the file.

How do I download my Instagram data?

Open Instagram, then go to Settings, then Accounts Center, then "Your information and permissions," then "Download your data." Pick your Instagram account and request the file.

Two settings matter on the last screen. Choose JSON, not HTML. Set Media quality to Low. We have the whole thing screen by screen in the export guide.

JSON or HTML: which format should I pick?

Pick JSON. It is the single setting that decides whether your report works.

Both formats take the same time to prepare and contain the same information, but HTML strips out the per-event timestamps our parser needs. Feed it an HTML export and most of your report comes back empty. If that already happened to you, nothing is lost: request a fresh export and switch the format.

How long does Instagram take to send it?

Usually minutes to a few hours. Instagram allows itself up to 30 days, so a slow one is not a broken one.

They email you when it is ready. Check your spam folder. Once the link arrives, use it fairly soon: Meta deletes it about 4 days later, and there is no way to revive an expired link. You just request a fresh one.

Can I do this on my phone?

Yes, the whole thing works on a phone: request, download, and the report.

On iPhone there is an Opt2In app on the App Store that reads the file for you. On any other phone the website does the same thing.

One warning, and it applies either way. Big exports often fail to download on an iPhone, which is why we keep saying to set Media quality to Low when you request it. If it still will not finish, use a laptop.

Do I have to unzip the file first?

No. Drop the whole ZIP in exactly as it downloaded and we read it for you.

What is in it.

What does the report actually show me?

The headline is a count: how many companies are holding your information in order to target you with ads. For the person who built this, that number was 4,778.

Under it you get the brands that paid to reach you in the last week, how much of your feed was advertising, the interests Meta's system has guessed about you, what your attention is worth at real ad rates, and the apps and sites reporting your activity back to Meta. Every number comes from your own file.

What is inside an Instagram data export?

More than most people expect. Your posts, likes, comments, searches, the ads you were shown, your messages, and the list of advertisers who uploaded your contact information to Instagram.

It also carries plainly personal things: your email address, your phone number, contacts you once let Instagram sync, and rough locations. This is worth knowing before you hand the file to anybody, including us. It is also why we read it in your browser instead of on a server.

Does the export include deleted messages?

If you came here to recover deleted DMs, this is not the tool for that, and we would rather say so than waste your afternoon.

Opt2In reads the advertising and tracking side of your export: who targeted you, how often, and what they think you like. We do not open, index, or upload your messages. Whether Meta includes a particular deleted conversation in an export is a question for Meta, not something we can promise either way.

Does this work for Facebook, TikTok, or Google?

Not yet. Instagram is the only live report today. Facebook is built but not switched on, and TikTok is next after it.

Still unsure? There is a sample report built from a real export, so you can see exactly what you would get before you download anything. Open the sample.
